Thrifty Monday

I thought that I would do something a bit different this week.  I love to show and tell pretty much everything I buy/acquire/collect.  Sometimes I spend entirely too much money and it would be a bit weird or show-offy (is that a word?).  However, this post cost me nothing.  You see, these are all pieces from my Mom.

I adore the past in general and love family history and having pieces of it that I can touch.  This is challenging when you live 3500 miles away from your family.  I can't bring any big antiques over, so I revel in the small things.

This tea cup was part of my Grandmothers wedding china set.   It's from a company called Harmony House.  I've never heard of it before, but I think that it's really pretty.  The flowers in the tea cup are from my mom's wedding bouquet.

My Mom loves to collect things that have her maiden name or my now maiden name in it.  That's why I have this 1950's Tala Cooks Measure (made in England so I guess its returned home) and this Moore Milk bottle.  I put white paper in the bottle to make it easier to read the front.

I've also managed to score a piece of Pyrex, its a small bowl from the Homestead range.  It matches the one I found several months ago here.  This particular bowl was given to my mom by our former neighbors way back when I was still in diapers.  Interestingly, this former neighbor hails from Devon and still remains close to my mom.

Do these count as Thrifty finds?  Anyone else enjoy collecting family heirlooms?

Thrifty Monday

For once I actually had the time to do some proper thrifting in my little London suburb and the one a few miles away and I thought that I should take you with me.

While my husband was getting a hair cut I had about an hour to wander out little high street, where there are about 8 charity shops.  Unfortunately they aren't all open on Saturdays so I didn't have the full experience!

After quite a bit of browsing I found this lovely little Pyrex bowl in my favorite shop.  I don't really know why this particular shop is my favorite, this is my first purchase there, but I'm happy to give them my money!  I also found a few books to take on my upcoming trip to the States.

When the hubby's haircut was done we had more errands to run one town over.  I talked him into letting me have a quick run around the charity shops there as well.  In the third or fourth shop I spotted a contender, but you never know for sure until you pick it up and check the backstamp.  An elderly lady had her hand out as well.  We both pulled back apologetically and told the other to go first.  I'm not that nice so I went ahead and grabbed what I was looking at.  Luckily, the object of her desire was a sushi set behind the soup bowls that I picked up.

After closer inspection I found that I had a Grindley Lupin Petal soup bowl and two matching plates for the bowl to set on.  Oddly, the second bowl wasn't really marked, but I'm pretty sure its Johnson Brothers Greydawn.  The possible Greydawn soup bowl simply had Made in England on the back.  I recognize the curve of the handles though, so I'm pretty sure I'm right.

My husbands comment was that people must of not eaten more than two spoonfuls of soup if they were eating it out of these bowls.  They might not be the most useful, but they are oh so very pretty!

Should I have let the old lady go first?  Was I horrible and rude?  I wonder if there should be a show called Charity shop feuds or something.   A Thrifty Mrs has posted about this a few times, but she always seems like the polite one!

Thifty Monday

It's been a bumper week over here and my husband is really beginning to wonder if it will ever end.  Or how in the world I will ever display everything properly.

First up is a first for me, a Johnson Brothers yellow cloud jug.  I found this at the weekly Spittlefields  antique fair.  I go every week as its right next to my office, but this is my first major find.  Well, that is beyond the baked goods stand! I just love the shape of this and hope to find more in the future!

Next up I have two eBay finds.  First up is a Grindley Peach Petal toast rack.  We're having guests in a few weeks and I feel that it would be really remiss of me if I didn't have enough toast racks for all.  Everyone thinks that way, right, right?

To stay with the Peach Petal theme I bring you this jug.  Everyone needs lots and lots of jugs!  If you agree, can you please tell my husband?

It would be wrong of me to not allow these matching pieces to spend some time together.

Thrifty Finds

It's that time!

First up is a piece that is kinda special and one I thought I'd never own.  I follow a lot of eBay auctions and am outbid almost daily.  I love utility china, but I feel like I need to be smart about the cost.  Typically salt and pepper shakers go for over £20 and that is far too rich for my blood.  The auction for these ended in the middle of the day and I won them for £5.  I feel pretty lucky!

Oops, almost forgot to mention that these are Woods Ware Beryl.

Next up I got 5 Woods  Ware Iris pasta bowls.  We find these to be hugely useful and there is definitely a lack of blue in our collection!

Anyone else find anything nice?

Thrifty Finds

It's funny, the second I say that I'll stop my eBay obsession except for a few key pieces all the things I had on my want list show up!

First up is this Woods Ware Jasmine jug.  Yes, I know I just  showed you one of these.  This is a slightly smaller version!  If this keeps up it won't be long until I have all the sizes they made!

I thought I'd show you both so that you  could see the size difference.  I see you rolling your eyes!  That's just how my husband reacted when it showed up!

Next up is something I have been hunting for for some time.  It's a Woods Ware Iris gravy boat that's not too blue.  The Iris stuff seems to come in different shades and we already had a light blue gravy boat plate in Iris.  We got it with the crazy big haul from Blackpool.
