Thrifty Monday

Hi there thrifty folks!  How are you?

I've been lucky and found some bits that didn't have to arrive in the mail.  I found this Pyrex Cinderella dish at the only charity shop near my office.  It was my first find there and I was happy to hand over my £3 and make off with it.  I hope that I find many more things there.  Its nice when your money goes towards something you want and to a good cause.  However, buying off of eBay doesn't really bother me.

Next up at Spittalfields I found  a massive pile of Woods Ware Jasmine plates.  Now, I've got loads of plates and if I buy any more Mr. Grumpy will divorce me.  Therefore I left the plates and just asked to buy these two bowls.  I have a couple of Beryl bowls in the same size, so these were a good addition.  I paid £5 for these, more than I would in a charity shop, but less than I would on eBay so I was happy with the purchase.

Thrifty Finds

It’s that time again, my favourite time of the week!  Although it is slightly anti climatic as I’ve had these for some time.  You know, the spending ban and all.

This week I have something a bit different.  A toast rack.  Everyone needs a toast rack.  Somehow, it makes toast more fun!  This toast rack is Grindley Lupin Petal.

Next up is some more Grindley, a Petalware water jug.  I’ve had quite a lot of luck with Grindley recently.  Usually everything I find is Woods Ware Beryl, you know, the green stuff.

My next find wasn’t from eBay, but from the antique fair at Old Spittlefields.  I found a Johnson Bros Goldendawn saucer.  This is my first piece from the Goldendawn line and is very exciting!  I do seem to have more luck with finding saucers than finding the teacups to go with them though!

I’m finding it a bit challenging to space everything out so much! It’s hard to remember what I’ve shown and haven’t shown.

Did anyone not on a shopping ban find anything lovely?

Look at my Jugs!

I’m sure that has been used somewhere before!  Anyway, this week I bring you two eBay finds that are….jugs!  Everyone needs jugs.  They are so useful.  You can put liquids in them and display them proudly on the Welsh Dresser that I don’t actually own yet.

First up is a Grindley Almond Petal jug.  I don’t know what kind of jug it is, cream, custard, milk?  I’ve been using it for milk.  This goes perfectly with the teacup and saucer I found a few weeks ago!  I love it when a collection comes together!

Next up is…. another jug!  This time a J&G Meakin Sunshine jug.  I hadn’t seen anything like this come up on eBay before and I pounced.  I don’t have much Meakin utility china, so I thought this would be a really nice addition to my collection.

100 Day Challenge (Sorta)

When I read this post over at A Blog From Blackpool I first thought, wow, I’m glad that I don’t have that problem!  Then other bloggers I follow started talking about it.  Then I had a think about it.  Just the other day my husband commented that he felt like we lived in the post office with the number of packages that I received.  He also said, do you really need another jug? Yes, yes I do, I thought!

Probably not was the reality.   I also don’t need to have a few other things I buy on almost a daily basis.  I don’t need an Aero candy bar, I don’t need a croissant from Pret, no matter how nice it smells.  I’m not even hungry when I eat these things.  I do actually need some new work pants and jeans as my recent weight loss means that they are quite large on me.  But I want to wait.

When I look at my spending habits I see that I don’t tend to make large purchases.  However, I nickel and dime myself to death.  (Would I say pound and pence myself to death over here?)  It’s only a pound you know.  This has to be controlled.

I can’t do the whole 100 days straight up; it would be cruel as I’m going to the States to visit my parents for two weeks.  That’s why I’m waiting to replace my too big clothing.  I also want to be able to shop at my favourite shops and spend money on doing stuff with my friends.

So, my rules are, no random candy bars and croissants.  This should help my budget as well as my waistline!  Also, no impulse eBay buys.  I’ve bought quite a lot recently and will be spacing out my Thrifty finds to cover the gaps.  I will also allow myself to buy things that are on the top of my want list if they are at the right price.  Some items hardly ever come up and you have to pounce on them when you see them.  However, there won’t be any random buying of things just because it’s pretty.  Just to be clear my want list is: Woods Ware Iris or Jasmine Jugs, Johnson Bros Greydawn teapot, and that’s about it.  So, those will be my only eBay purchases allowed.  No new clothing or shoes will be allowed.

As for the weekly antique fair at Spittlefields or hitting charity shops.  My finds are so rare and such a thrill that I won’t cut these out.  In the 6 months I’ve lived in the UK I’ve found 1 piece  of utility china in my little town and now that I’m working I don’t really get around like I used to.  Also, I’ve found a staggering 4 pieces at the antique fair.  If I find something and the price is right, there is no reason for me to not buy it.   I am giving up chocolate here people!  There has to be something left!

What is allowed, will be house decorating supplies and dates with my husband.

I’m going to do a recap each Wednesday and see how things are going!  I'm going to keep this up for 4 weeks and then reassess before moving on for the next four weeks.

Is anyone else jumping on the no spend band wagon?

Thrifty Finds Returns!

I’ve had some real thrifty luck recently.  Considering that I’m really only looking for a few specific target items and not just pretty things I like that saying something!

Last month my husband and I headed to Old Spittlefields market to check out Judy’s monthly vintage fair.  Just a few minutes after arrival I found this Rose Ballerina jug.   I was giddy with joy!  Does anyone know which company made this type?  I can’t seem to find it online.

Next up in the distance I spotted some Woods Ware Jasmine trios.  We decided to buy 4 sets.  Just minutes later we found more Woods Ware Jasmine.  A lot more.  We got 6 trios, 6 cake plates and 6 side plates.  I don’t think we would have bought the first 4 trios if we had come across the bigger lot first, but now we have backups!

Everything came in this lovely carrying case!

Pop Up Vintage Fair

Yesterday my husband and I went to the Pop Up Vintage fair in Islington.   I’ve managed to get him almost as excited about utility china as I am and we were both really looking forward to it.  We even managed to wake up early on Sunday morning which never happens!

We were the last two people to get the discount filled goodie bags upon arrival.  My husband and I have the worst luck, I mean the worst.  Just since August our wedding was ruined by a hurricane, UKBA made a mistake in my visa, my former super stole some money, and I’ve come second for more jobs than I can count.  When we have small bits of luck like the discount bags it gets us really excited.  We quickly flipped through the discounts and pulled a few of the best ones aside.

The stalls were set up really nicely and it was fun seeing all people who were in full on 1940’s attire.  I loved the singing.  I disappointed with the size though.  For some reason we both expected it to be larger.  I was also disappointed that out of about 40 stalls maybe five had housewares and none of them had utility china.  I almost bought some retro plastic egg cups, but the price was too rich for my blood.  I did see a WWII ration card which was really cool, but I would have nothing to do with it.

I’m really not into wearing vintage clothing.  Being on the overweight side makes it really hard to find anything that would fit me and it gets really depressing when trying to find something.  I also feel like some people are really able to take old pieces and incorporate them with new pieces and make them look amazing, whereas I looked frumpy in my wedding dress despite the fancy hair and makeup person doing an amazing job.  What I need is a super stylish friend to go shopping with!

Did you go?  What did you think?  Is anyone headed to the Joy of Vintage Fair in Watford this weekend?  Do you think I’ll find more homewares there?

Just in case anyone was wondering, we passed our discount bags to someone else.
